My six-cents worth:

Many of these people who start various organizations to SAVE the -__whatever____ probably started out with the very best intentions, then $$ DONATIONS $$ start rolling in -------- now they have a FOUNDATION (mind you - tax free), now they have to HIRE and actually PAY people, of course they have to have telephones, offices, etc
They just won't and can't let go when the endangered "whatever" is no longer endangered --- if they did they would cease to exist (no more lovely office, computers, cars, phones, SALARIES & PERKS-----and yes they do treat themselves to all kinds of lovely PERKS
So naturally they will fight tooth-and-nail to keep their little PET endangered -whatever- alive and well.
You don't think for a nano-second they are going to hold a press conference and actually tell the truth------and they certainly are NOT going to want their famous spokesperson to know.
As usual it is about greed and protecting oneself ... somehow I doubt that is going to change

Just wish they would take the damm Coyote off their list --- we are just over run with the sneaky little things --- and yes they do a lot of damage as they hunt in packs and now are not afraid to just walk up to your front door.

Two blocks from us they brought down two Irish wolfhounds, killing one, the other one had massive medical bills---and they were in their own yard.

We have a lot of hunting here, turkey, deer, bear, wild hog................which is necessary........

BUT, I wish they would OUTLAW bear and wild hog hunting with DOGS.....believe me the DOGS get mauled in such a terrible way-----during Each and Every hunt.
Also DOG BAITING is just plain SICK, as SICK as the people you do it----and this I won't back away from.

GEE I feel better already!

Mt Redoubt has settled down to just steaming, no ash or sulfar smell. I think the old girl just wanted some attention like the attention that was given to the volcano in Japan and the one in Siberia.

But I"m still carrying my emergency kit...just in case.

SailorG, not to be a pain or "Palin" as it were but where were my girl's eyes fixed on, wolves on the ground? She might have run into a Russian bomber who came snooping when Obama stopped by:

The bomber was skirting our air space. So much for having our backs, sniff! I have to do everything!

just saw this and was going to put it in obama thread, but i saw lou2's post and i think it ties in :)
don't worry Canada had our backs "Hail Canada"

*quote
*Canada's defense minister said fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian bomber in the Arctic on the eve of President Obama's visit to Ottawa last week.

Peter MacKay said Friday that the bomber never made it into Canadian airspace. But he said two Canadian CF-18 jets met the bomber in international airspace and sent a "strong signal that they should back off."

He called the timing of the Feb. 18 incident a "strong coincidence."

Sneaky devils them!

Triple B, when you say "Hail" Canada, I feel self-conscious about my tyrannic side. It could be a Fleudian srip as I like to say, but you're planting the seed in viewers' minds. I'm the friendly, neighbourly, push-over-y Canadian, remember? Don't blow my cover please! No one would ever think to look for the next tyrant here in Canada. Let me get there first, ok?

In Québec, we tend to say "Vive"... (although with a lot of nationalistic things attached other than Canada).

I'll take "Go Canada", ? As per you, my motto is "US of A, we love you!" :D

Haven't you heard we're friends with Russia now...not so sure about Canada. Haven't figured out this new administration yet.

I disagree-Obama ate our secret weapon: a beaver tail! He put his heart at risk for us, that's gotta be love!!!!
He ought to stay away from anything Putin on the other hand wants to make him to ingest!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/03 ... index.html

*A total of five "explosive events" were recorded at Mount Redoubt, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters Monday.

The eruptions sent ash columns some 60,000 feet into the air above the snow-covered peak, and several communities west of Anchorage, Alaska, reported falling ash, officials said.

*a number of commercial flights have been canceled coming in and out of Anchorage International Airport," USGS geophysicist John Power said earlier Monday. "We could see disruptions to air travel to south central Alaska, and Alaska as a whole for a period of weeks to months."

*"Stay indoors and stay out of it as much as you could," he advised. In the event residents have to go outside, he said, they wear masks.

He said the abrasive ash is dangerous to breathe and "not good for your lungs." It could pose a problem for the town, he said, if it prevents airplanes from flying into Port Alsworth. Flying is the only way to get to the town.

*ash will be about the thickness of a penny or a dime. He warned residents to take precautions.
"It does pose significant problems for mechanical systems, people with respiratory illnesses and aircraft," he said, adding that residents should be prepared to stay indoors.

Those in range of the ashfall should seal their windows and doors, the National Weather Service said. It also advised that residents protect electronics, minimize driving and cover air intakes and open water supplies.

The alert level went to red, the highest level, when the eruptions began, according to the Alaska Volcano

I think Alaskan Mother Nature is sending a clear signal of protest as to why I'm not yet regent Queen. Simple! It's a tantrum! When will Alaskan mortals simply come to this undeniable truth? Patrick and I by now would have hauled one mean iceberg over to cool the volcano's hot temper. We firstly never would have let global warming reach its shores! Turn away sea guzzling aliens and apply the bonus tax to oil drilling executives. For starters.

Seriously, my peoples of Alaska are not wusses. Ain't no volcano gonna scare them off! :x

There's been 6 eruptions so far, one from last night. So far nothing today, but she is building a dome and it's expected to go again. We got a very light dusting of ash here, most went north into the valley or west. Before the clouds came in with this next storm (down south you whips would call it a hurricane for us it's just a storm) I could see the fire that was just down on the side from the top of Mt. Redoubt. It looked like a big bon fire. Mt. Redoubt is 46.4 miles SW of my house. Better turn the computer off just in case. You guys have fun. Hopefully I will be able to come back on line for the rose ball.

She quieting down: This mornings post on the Alasak Volcano Observatory web site:

2009-03-25 15:11:22

The last known ash emission was at 5:12 AKDT this morning. The plume from this event did not extend above about 15,000 feet. Based on the level of seismic activity, AVO is lowering the aviation color code to ORANGE and the volcanic alert level to WATCH

So she is no longer RED, but we still have to watch. It's easier to breath when you go outside now and my eyes aren't burning anymore. Here we were very lucky, even though we are so close the ash we got was very very light and fine. As the snow melts it will clean it up. Plus an added bonus, the ash has helped in clear ice from the roadways.

The website http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Redoubt.php has video and photos of the old girl. The town of Drift River which is on the West side of Cook Inlet saw the flooding from the melting ice. It's been estimated that Drift River was hit by more water than is held at any time in the entire Mississippi River.

AVO..Alaska Volcano Observatory gave this statement a little while ago.

Remarks: Over a 21 hour period beginning on Sunday, at March 22, 2009, 22:38 AKDT (Monday, March 23, 2009, 06:38 UTC ), 6 separate explosions occurred at Redoubt Volcano, each producing ash plumes exceeding 30,000 feet (10,000 m) above sea level. The last of these explosions occurred on Monday, March 23, 2009, at 19:41 AKDT (Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 03:41 UTC), about 36 hours ago as of this writing.

During and following these events, large lahars (volcanic mud and debris flows) were observed traveling down the Drift River Valley, some reaching the mouth of the Valley at the Cook Inlet. Light ashfall (less than 5 mm) from the explosions has been reported at several locales spanning a region of about 100,000 square kilometers, mainly to the north of the volcano.

Mt Redoubt has erupted two more times. We have a light to 1/4 inch of ash fallout forecasted for the area. The eruption plume is estimated to have reached 65,000 ft. Lookout LouLou, it's heading your way.
