The new "road" to Nome. I guess this is directed at OUR Sailorgirl--------------doesn't Alaska already have this road??? The media slants/twists/etc everything so I thought I would ask you. Also the media (hey don't blame me) also said that under the present Governor that Eskimo's are receiving very little government assistance, such as medical, heating & food, etc. as well as proper education...............that many of these people are actually being starved and have no hope for an education?????????????????????

I know that media relies on ratings, and its hard to seperate fact from fiction..............

If I'm out-of-line asking just delete this topic......not looking for a fight. lynda

There is no "road" to Nome. There is the traditional sled dog line. I think most of folks want the railroad vice a road, less damage to the environment. But the technology isn't here yet. The tundra is not forgiving. No one up here wants to see it damage.

I do not know what media you are listening to but they are wrong. There is a lot of state and federal money goes out to the native Alaskan. Some of them have chosen to live the "old life". Away from education, learning the old ways. Each village has a village nurse and when someone gets sick or hurt there is a very good life flight system in this state. As far as heating oil, something has to give. If you have chosen not to work but to live via hunting and fishing and you have no money coming in, how are you going to buy fuel oil.

Last fall Governor Palin gave every resident in the state of Alaska $1200 to pay their utility bills for this winter. That's every resident. I live alone I got one check. I have a neighbor that there is him, his wife and 11 children. They got 13 $1200 checks for $15,600 to put towards their utility costs. No one in the state of Alaska should freeze this winter. This money was on top of the yearly PFD...Permanent Fund Dividend check which was $2000. So for my one neighbor that was $26,000 for a total of $41,600 from the state. They have new snow machines, new carpet, a new car.. what an individual decides to spend the money on is their choice.

I am tired of the media who keeps trying to attack Palin by spreading lies about the state. What about the poor in New York state, or New Jersey or California. Why doesn't the media care enough about them to make a big deal out of their plight.? Oh yea, they can't because it won't make Palin look bad to their viewers.

lynda forgive for getting angry, it wasn't at you. It was at the media. I turned the TV news off this morning because one of the talking heads was making comments about Palin's black boots and how they look like something that you see in a porno film and she was asking if they are the "in" thing in Alaska.

Before she attacked Palin...and yes I see it as attacks not as reporting...the same talking head was boo hooing how bad it was that Dashle wasn't going to get the cabinet position because of a little accounting error he had with his taxes. He broke the law was caught and had to pay the piper, he corrected his mistake in a "timely manner" otherwise he would have gone to jail.

I liked it better when the only news coverage we got was the yearly Iditarod.

off my soap box....sorry.

SailorG, admit it, Alaska would be in better hands with me. There, I've said it. Don't hate me. I only have the care of my people (Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth) and first peoples too! What most people don't get is that when you are truly ruled by Nature, that the same standards don't necessarily apply. We have many comforts but a lot of waste. In places like California, the New Agers are all into self-sustenance and a way of living that's akin to survivalist Eskimos. The poles are shifting literally and figuratively. And maybe in the midst of all that, we'll become intelligent life forms. Look at the Swedes that created a device Africans can wear around their neck like we hook up any old iPod or whatever, that gives them drinkable water. If more people exert themselves towards truer purposes with benefits for all, you'll see less disparities across the globe. Don't let that detract anyone from my goal of annexing Alaska!! Vote for me!! In my mind, I'm already Queen of Canada (from family seniority) & the Yukon (because it sounded exotic before Patrick came along) so it's not a leap after that.

I just went to the wholesaler to buy more bottled water, just in case Mt. Redoubt blows. It would be nice to have one of those Swedish devices that makes water drinkable right now.

I really feel bad about getting so excited earlier. I live in Alaska because I want to live in Alaska. It's my home and I get really upset when it's attacked.

Yukon and Northwest Terriotories are mine!!!!

Nunevut!!! You heretic agent provocateur tourist!! You'd get us in human rights trouble for mislabelling the territories this way. It proves they're better with me, my little treasures! I'm going to send Patrick with PETA after you for racing dogs, Mrs Vicks! That way I'll eliminate any competition!

Ouch, ouch and triple ouch.

Sure wish someone would give me some extra $$. I just had our 500-gal propane tank filled @ $1.76 per gal (which I think was an excellent price). We use it for the gas stove top, one hot water heater, and room heaters, and a gas dryer -- the rest of the house is on electric.

Still not one word about the volanco or any-type of earthquake in Alaska on the news, but yes you are right Sarah Palin's boots were a topic on one of the channels, as were where Bristol's boyfriend was living (either with the Gov or back with his parents????? Never did bother to hear the end---turned the TV OFF).

I think we will see a change in the "news" stations....when things get tough advertisers drop off and that is what keeps these "news" shows on the airwaves. In fact I actually watch very little TV now

No no news on Mt. Redoubt. She is still steaming but no ash and no sulfur smell. All eyes have turned to the other two that have erupted, the one in Japan and the one in Siberia, as to where their ash clouds will be drifting next. so far both have been dispersing before they have entered any of the normal air routes.

I have a very sweet older lady neighbor who was so mad from a conversation she had yesterday when I got home from work this morning she was still pounding the road, back and forth trying to calm down. She was at the Senior Citizen's Center yesterday to play cards and met an woman who is living with her son and his family. That household received 24 pfd and utility checks last fall. That's $76, 800 total. $28800 of that was utility checks. They are on welfare, all their utilities are paid for them.

If it is left up to the media, I'm sure they will blame Sarah instead of the real culprits..the Alaska State Legislature. They set the rules that Sarah and the rest of us have to work with.

Ashley Judd is headlining a campaign against Sarah Palin on www.eyeonpalin.org (I think) about her animal rights violations and aerial shooting of wolves.

What folks who do not live here do not know, we have a population explosion of wolves. For a long time they were a protective species up here. No there are so many they are endangering other animals in their quest for survival. Aerial hunting came into effect under than last two governors but continued under Sarah's administration. Wolves run in packs. They have attacked children walking to school and on the play ground. I have only heard of one being killed a little 5 year old girl. Aerial shooting is better than traps. The regulations as to who can do this is massive, not just anyone can go out aerial hunting for wolves. The pelts are turned in for tanning and benefit the homeless and needy. I honestly do not know what happens to the meat.

I realized after I wrote this, especially about seal hunts that the eco-system is such that for instance if the numbers of seals are not somehow within certain quotas, the fish supply goes down significantly which in turns endangers other species (whales etc) and the ice mass does get very populated. I concede.
However! Having said that! That's a cheap shot to overpower from the air a wolf, it's not a fair fight for one. If you want to be so humane, you don't shoot out its legs and let it agonize, there is no honour in killing sadistically. You want humane - develop a very sneaky poison, I don't know. But killing like you're the worst predator makes you less than an animal in my eyes. There is no more disgusting sight in a woman!

LouLou I'm do not know anything about shooting out their legs. One of the requirements is that the shooter has to be a dead shot. One bullet one kill. If the shooter causes an animal even a wild one to suffer he faces on his first offense serious fines. The punishment goes up and can include losing their aerial hunting license and jail time. Not anyone can go out aerial hunting in this state. You have to be licensed and you are told when you can go out..what you window of hunt is..and what happens out there is strictly monitored. If an aerial hunter hunts outside of his assigned zone it is a serious offense. I am really at a lost as to why you would think that the animals are hunted inhumanely.

I want to add one more thing about aerial hunting. It is not an open season item. If it is needed it is utilized. Honestly it has not been used very oftened. It is a last resort option used to protect remote villages from the wolf packs.

I believe these animals are hunted humanely. I have heard that these wolves can be very dangerous and to kill one inhumanely is a very cruel thing.Sometimes we have to control the animal population in respect to the human population.
I am sure the Alaskan government would not condone inhumane hunting... nowhere does. Shoot the animal, kill or shoot the animal, track and kill. Who would want to see any animal suffer?

It's not just the human population up here. The wolf packs take down moose even if they do not need the food just for sport.

I was wondering what it was that caused so much upset over the aerial hunting here in Alaska. I just saw the infomerical that Ashley Judd has put out in the name of Defenders of Wildlife foundation that blasts the state's predator control program.

I have no idea where these stupid folks have gotten their info but they are WRONG!!! It appears to me to be just another attack on Sarah Palin.

My God, these guys must be really afraid of her to keep up with their hatred like they are doing.

The saying: Consider the Source before you waste your time and energy in getting upset.

I hope the state sues them.

One of the local TV stations said this morning that aerial hunting will be on the next voter ballot. Voters will be asked to either end the program, leave as is or expand the program. Issue papers pro and con on all three parts will be mailed out to each registered voters at least 30 days before the election. Rural communities are asking for the expansion, city dewllers are asking for the contailment. Right now it appears to be boiling down to urban vs rural.

SailorG, I love you, but you must take a good look at the vid of Palin that toured the world, shooting from a Cessna and injuring the wolf's leg while he howls in pain. That's not one shot. License to kill? REMOVED!!! Ashley Judd came along well after the video came out. It's been on the Huffington Post for months, well before the turkey thing. There are other ways to control the population. Either capture and put on a reservation, microchip them and keep watch.
